Why we travel the Appian Way

The “Appia Hic et Nunc II” or “Appia, here and now II” path is a tribute to the Romans who built this first long paved road and to the writer and journalist Paolo Rumiz and his four friends, who walked, rediscovered and retraced it in 2015. With their walk and the subsequent book APPIA by Paolo, many activities along the road were started. The Italian Ministry of Culture has funded 20 million euros for spot projects along the Appian Way. And in 2024, some sections of the Appian Way were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

But the real goal of Paolo Rumiz and his friends was to make the Appian Way a road again for hikers who came from all over the world to walk it, just like the Camino de Santiago de Compostela, and this has not yet been achieved.

With our 2022 walk and this second walk of 2025 we would like to give further impetus to this initiative started in 2015 and make the route that Paolo traced in 2015 and that we followed in 2022 relatively easy.

To make it easier for other walkers to find the way, we will publish all the daily sections of the Appian Way on this website, with markers or kmz files that can be loaded into Google Earth. In addition, we will insert special markers for landmarks such as Roman bridges, ruins, sections of Roman roads, places to sleep and places to eat.
